LIONEL HORWITZ

Founder

In Lionel’s own words, he was “born into the clothing game.” He entered the business world at the age of 18 years and established his first retail business. Over the years Lionel has founded numerous other businesses - all in the retail industry - with significant success owing to his hands-on approach, customer care and excellent product knowledge.

Nonetheless, Lionel’s real sense of satisfaction has always emanated from his passion for assisting those in need and making a difference to their quality of life. Lionel can best be described as “the embodiment of chesed.” He and his wife, Charmaine, have always had an open home characterised by a constant flow of guests who are viewed more as family members. Lionel and Charmaine are known across the Jewish communities for their warmth and hospitality.

Due to the escalating cost of living, the request for a respectable second-hand clothing outlet couldn’t be ignored and Lionel didn’t waste any time establishing the Gan Tamar boutique to answer this need. The boutique not only services Gan Tamar recipients, but the Jewish community at large.

Lionel’s legendary ability to engage and connect with people from all walks of life and his unique sense of humour also make him the ideal member of our Management Team to head up our extremely popular “Shmuze Club.” Every Friday, as recipients and volunteer drivers collect their Shabbat Box(es) there is a welcoming and intimate social gathering and Lionel is every ready to chat and listen to anyone who needs an attentive ear. Lionel’s life-experience and wisdom contribute to the “home-away-from-home” ambiance synonymous with Gan Tamar Foundation’s ethos.
