ABOUT US
Gan Tamar is a Non-for-profit organisation that prepares and delivers complete, cooked shabbos and Yom tov meals to families and individuals in need. We assist families and individuals who, for reasons of financial constraints, sickness or disability are unable to buy food or cook for themselves.
Gan Tamar started in 2020 in the Horwitz’s home kitchen. In response to the increasingly difficult conditions of members across the Jewish community, we started cooking nourishing meals for a handful of individuals and families. As the needs grew, so did the number of people we were assisting. Within six months we were making over 20 meals every week. Three years on we are providing for hundreds of families.
Whilst nourishing meals are the cornerstone of our organsiation we are committed to supporting our recipients in as many ways as possible. Not in the least, by providing a warm, accepting and nourishing environment for people to come, connect and feel embraced. We develop close and personal relationships with our recipients so that we are best placed to help them in various aspects of their lives.
Gan Tamar in Hebrew means the Garden of Tamar. Tamar (Kim Lieb nee Horwitz) passed away on Yom Kippur, September 2021. The organisation is dedicated to her memory.
Tamar in Hebrew is a date tree, characterised by it’s wide-reaching, strong roots, broad branches that give shade and, more obviously, it’s rich, sweet fruit. So both the person and the name really encapsulates what Gan Tamar is all about – nourishing, supporting and connecting people.
